For the old fatboy PS2 to get online requires the use of Sony's Network Adapter, which connects through the hard drive bay on the back. You should still be able to find these in stores but if not your best bet will likely be eBay.
You say you already have an ethernet connection- are you using a USB adapter? If so most games will not recognize that.
