Are either of you going through a router to share the connection with the PC? If so you may need to forward some ports. Also check on any firewall settings if one or both of you have one running. The ports EA say the game needs open are TCP ports 10300, 10301, 10310 and 13505 along with UDP ports 6000 and 3658. If neither of you have routers you may need to talk to your ISP about this- they may have them closed on their end.
