Now that the initial launch rush is over it stands to reason that system sales would drop a bit. This seems a bit much however. Official Chart Track data shows a drop in sales of 82% in the UK.
Chart Track data covers 7000 retail outlets, making for 90% of the software market. This includes stores such as GAME, HMV and Play.com. The figures were confirmed by a spokesperson from Chart Track when speaking to gameindustry.biz.
Meantime, on the software side sales of the top two PS3 games (Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm) have dropped by 60 percent.
As of yet Sony has declined to comment on the numbers. Personally, I find it somewhat a non- issue. The supply of PS3s at the launch was large enough to ensure most, if not all, that wanted systems would get it and allowed enough stock to keep stores going after the initial rush. As more top-tier games are released sales will eventually pick up and all should be well.
