Yes, if you are connecting directly to the modem turn it off when switching the ethernet cable from your computer to the PS2. If you don't do that your ISP will not "let go" of the IP address given to your computer. You shouldn't have to wait 5 minutes though- the amount of time it would take to switch the cable around should be enough, about 30 seconds.
