I've just had to fork out £145 to get a replacement PS3 because of this.
I had my original PS3 April 2007, that developed a fault and wouldn't boot in February 2008 - Sony duly sent a replacment (which turned out to be a reconditioned unit).
March 2009 and the replacement unit develops the 80010514 fault, this happened during game play (no updates etc), so in my view must be somekind of hardware failure. Sony tell me that it's out of Warranty and can not be fixed by the user, therefore my ONLY option if I wish to continue using the games I have spent my hard earned on is to give Sony another £145 and accept another reconditioned unit as a replacement (which incidentally only has 3 month warranty).
I can safeguard the replacment by using the "continuous play" insurance policy which is £5 per month (another £60 per year).
Tell me, is it unfair for the consumer to expect a £360 console to last more than one year?
I don't think so
