Unhappy

When racing using manual gears and coming to a stop for one reson or another (usually as a result of a collision in my case) I'm finding it impossible to move off again, even after selecting 1st gear. At the same time the rev counter on the right flashes red as though the engine's revving high, even though my thumb's off the throttle button. It's very annoying as I'm not a big fan of auto gears on car games and not yet skilled enough to get round the circuits without skidding off the track and stopping a few times. Any idea what's going on here? Thanks
