Default Almost completely unable to play games online

I can connect to the Playstation Network just fine, and download things at a good speed, but playing games is virtually impossible. Bell recently sent me a new router (tried using the old one to solidify my problem, and it's infinitely worse), and the person who promoted it over the phone told me that this new router has top gaming speed for the 360 and ps3. It's called the 2wire.

I have several online games, and when I try searching for games, my problem is always the same. I'm only able to find a small number of rooms, and they're all laggy as heck. They're laggy to the point that I can rarely ever join them. And on the very rare occasion that I do join, it's laggy to the point where it's just about unplayable.

Wired Connection
UPnP Not Available
NAT Type Type 2

Ok, I was just on the phone with Bell, and as I already knew, my connection speed is just fine. He then linked me with their gaming specialist. He then told me that he's only trained for giving support for X-Box live.

From what I can gather, Bell and X-Box have some kind of exclusive deal going on. It's not so much that that perturbs me, but that the lady on the phone specifically told me that the new router they were sending me offers optimal support for the Playstation 3. It seems like Bell specifically don't want me on the Playstation Network at all, in favor of X-Box Live.

Well, bagel, the main problem probably is needing to open some ports on the router for the gaming aspect of the PS3 online. No doubt it does offer "optimal support" but you just need to tweak it a bit (as is the case with most routers).

If you go into the router set up and open the following ports in Port Forwarding you should be good to go.

TCP Ports: 80, 443, 5223, and 10070 - 10080
UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658, and 10070

I can't seem to find where I would be able to adjust any of this.

It varies from brand to brand. Usually this is in the Advanced or Security sections. Look for "Port Forwarding" or possibly "Virtual Servers"- some brands don't even call it by port forwarding.

Trust bell to do something completely different from the norm.

Judging from what i read that looks like the right place- make the application name playstation 3 (or PS3, whatever you like- it's an identifier for your own benefit), select the right type (TDP or UDP) and put the numbers in the blanks marked Port Range. The single ports you put the same number in both blanks- with the UDP 10070 - 10080 put the numbers in just like that. Hit the Add Definition button after each one and redo to eventually get them all.

Sometimes the routers need to be turned off and on again for the settings to take full effect- try that and see what happens. Just unplug it for a few seconds and plug it back in again.

Somebody told me to enable DMZ mode. Still nothing. I feel like I'm out of options now.

Sounds like that router wasn't what it was cracked up to be. I would take it back for a refund and pick up a more familiar brand such as a Linksys or D-Link.

After doing some research, I think this is all entirely because 2wire routers don't support upnp.
