Default PS3 and backwards compatibility...

Hello there guys,

As far as I know, there was a PS3 model which accepted PS2 and the old PS games but this feature was thn removed.

Well I would like to know what you guys think about this. A few questions/statements come to my mind if I think about it...

Why was this feature removed?

Being a loyal PS owner (i started of with the old PS), why should I not be able to play my games on my new system?

Could this be emulated in the future with a official firmware update?

Maybe they are waiting for the PS2 sales to totally die?

I would personally love to be able to play my old games on my PS3. I had MGS 1 and I would rebuy it again if it played on my PS3 (my PS died).

The main reason they took the PS2 chipset out of the 40 GB model was to simplify manufacturing and make the system a bit cheaper to make. This was a response to those that found the price of the original PS3 units a bit much to bear/ had no interest in backward compatibility. The lost BC only applies to PS2 games, BTW- you can still play PSOne games with no problems so if you can find yourself the original MGS in good condition go for it.

As for the future, Peter Dille (current head of SCEA) did say in an interview that it would be possible to patch the PS2 to be able to play downloadable PS2 games, much like we can with the PSOne games in the store now. While this would not help with your actual discs it would be a good way to get some of the classics you may have missed out on. Whether they will actually do this, however, is up in the air right now. While he did say it would be possible he did not say with any cetainty it will actually happen.

Even if Sony did go ahead with this, they would need to really work at it. Lets be honest, sometimes the PS1 classics on the PS Store are few and far between, so what would this mean if they started to do this with PS2 games? Still, wouldnt hurt to give it a try..
