Hello everyone, I just got a PS3 a few days ago and I want to get it connected to the internet. I have DSL via my phone cable which connects to a Modem then goes to my computer. I see that the back of my PS3 needs an Ethernet connection. My PS3 is in my basement, while my computer/modem is in the upper level of my house. I've been looking at wireless routers on the INTERNET, but have decided that I'm not not sure I know what the heck I'm doing. My goal is to keep my PS3 up to date with software and to keep any games updated. I do not plan on playing any games on line. I would like to be able to surf the net or read emails from down stairs, but that's NOT important. If you can offer me some advise on what I need to do to make this happen, I'd appreciate it. Keep in mind, I know very little about networking. Thanks. Nick.

Well, Radd, a router will definitely get things going for you. I have to ask how much distance there is between the modem (where the router will be) and the PS3. Depending on the distance and how many floors are between the two, your PS3 may not get enough wi-fi signal to do the job. If you are able to run ethernet cable down, however, that will take care of things (if you don't mind a couple of smal) holes along the walls going down there. I've made this suggestion a couple of times in the PS3 hardware section- if looking at routers, I readily suggest one from the D-Link brand. Easy to set up, easy to change settings as needed, reasonably priced. If you didn't plan on connecting wirelessly you can find a regular router for even cheaper yet. I will also say the PS3's browser is not the best when it comes to web surfing-it's a tad crippled when it comes to certain plug ins like flash, java, etc..

It's about 40' from my computer to where the PS3 will be. I don't think I can run a cable all the way down there, as I just finished off my basement. All my phone lines come into the house near the PS3, but my computer is upstairs. What if I had a 2nd modem? Could I put a modem in near the PS3 and run phone cable to the modem, then run Ethernet cable from the modem to the ps3? thanks. Nick. |

Your ISP might be able to help you out there- no doubt they will charge a few bucks more per month on that extra modem but it is one option. 40 feet should be good enough for signal to go wireless but I wonder if any wiring in the floors/ ceilings may cause a bit of interference (doesn't take much sometimes and the PS3's wi-fi card can be a bit flaky). Another option you may want to consider is what's called "powerline networking"- these devices plug into your existing power outlets and use your electrical lines to network the internet around your house. You would just need one in the outlet where your modem is and another wherever something you want online is (the PS3 downstairs). The ethernet cable would then go from the computer and the PS3 to these small boxes- no stringing up large amounts of ethernet, no drilling holes, no mess at all. Netgear's XE 103 may be just the thing.

I can definitely vouch for the 'powerline networking'. That is what i have set up myself, and it works great! No problems at all and very easy to set up..
