I think the difficulty setting shouldnt be in games at all!Games should vary the difficulty as the game goes along.Good examples of this are The Getaway,Gta 3 and Vice City.

With some games this works but with others it may not. Lets say MGS2 had no difficulty setting, it would have taken me a lot longer to beat half of the bosses. With the lower difficulty settings you can play through it the first time and get familiarized with the game without getting frustrated. EDIT:Isn't this thread a lot like the Are Games Getting To Easy..... thread?

Gotta agree with Rex on this one. I mean, look at DMC2. It's downfall was the fact that it tried to change it's difficulty according to your skill, but turned out to be too easy. Difficulty settings are necessary as not everyone has the same skill level. What good is a game that doesn't allow you to select a level, and is so impossibly difficult for you that you can't play it? And also gotta agree with rex on the similarity. I thought that thread was also quite similar to the Let Down? thread, or maybe it's just me being spam-paranoid.

This is basically the same as the aforementioned and linked thread so this one is now closed. Refer to above posts to understand why.
