First youll need to review the news post Here The question is, does Sony have the right to make such claims that gamers do not own the games they buy? Vote and tell me what you think. Personally I am of the beleif that Sony doesnt have the right to limit the level of ownership that a gamer possesses over again. Yet again it is a similiar story to the music industry, where they are trying to bleed their target market dry and make sure they get every single cent they can out of their loyal customers. Eventually the customers will turn on the corporations and take things into their own hands.

MMM i can see where they come from - But i love when you go through the Pre-owned bins in game and the like and find a ancient game you might not have otherwise played. Or one you had ages ago and get again just for replayability - Tiff dragged my round EVERY preowned bin in sunderland, newcastle, metrocentre, wigan, manchester, trafford centre looking for ICO - it turned into a sunday afternoon obsession.

Sony are going to have a problem with this as a concept to implement. Just think of how many stores there are in you area which rent games. Now, I occassionally rent a game if i am looking for a quick blast of something over the weekend - and in my local store you can rent a movie and a game over the weekend for £6. Now back when i bought my first PS2 in early 2001 i rented alot of games simply because i couldnt afford them after forking out £400 for 2 games and second controller as well as the ps2 (obviously i wasnt married then!! ) This worked well for me as rental was cheaper then and i played about 30 games for the price of buying 2!! My local store turns over nearly £3 million in games rentals and sales annually (there are 4 games rental stores in a town of 45,000 people) so its serious business. Sony would have a serious problem trying to justify that you couldnt resell games and by the same case rent them as only one person would be buying the licence. The other side of this licence issue would be that the games therefore should be possible to copy as once i would have my licence and games disk, i would have to copy it so as not to damage the original disk and since the licence to play one disk of the game would be mine, and my ps3 will only play one disk at a time, what legal justification would Sony have to make the games duplication proof?

Oooo this sounds a bit like the B.S. that the U.K. Goverment tired out in the mid 80's of a licenced VHS tapes. They said that Sony/Scotch were developing a VHS PAL Video Tape that will record fron a TV program & you could only watch it a maxium of 10 times & then it was no good (as in would erase it self) In fact the out come of that venture was the invention of MACROVision (copy protected material, where copied the copied master would be all distorted) True I've taken Jane along Game shops to search for Gems in the 2nd hand bins and I did finally get ICO, but not 2nd hand, but new, sealed, not a re-release, A gem hidding away with all cards intact & no bleaching from shop display and for only £14!! Even Jane's dad goes through the bins with me. There are games out there that at the time of new I've not been able to purchase, as in not got the cash to buy or there's 6 titles I want in one week! It took me a lot of guts to sell my collection of original MINT!!!! PSX games to GameStation, I got a bloody good deal on one of them (Disruptor, sold for £50 and it's 7 years old) the guy was the manager's son & he was nearly cry that I was selling them. He asked if he could have special pricing on them for me (so he could blag them for his self at the cost of his week's wage!) Every time I go back in there eyes light up thinking I've got more Gems to sell. I say NO SONY!!!!! there are children out there from single parent families or there own parents have set them there own limits on buying games and splashing out £50 for UT2007 brand new is madness unless your in a well paid full time job (like me & jane and we still can't afford half the stuff we really want) The 2nd hand market or even BUDGET games is a big seller in any Game shop/hyper market. So do you think that Sony will Allow Budget games for there PS3 in the first year? Still waiting for a platinum collection on the PSP you B@st@rd$!!!!!!!!!!

This rumor has been going around for months- Sony's already said that while they do own the ability to do so they won't. Doing that would jeopardize places like EB/gamestop, which are some of their larger distributors of new games. Bit of a necessary evil, so to speak.

EDIT - It should be noted that Sony is planning to digitally release new games and have actually hired people on to work on a digital-only release for near launch. If they do this, then that basically destroys the new and used games markets. If it's successful at least. |

Ok, I voted a resounding 'NO'. Here's the problem I have with this whole stupid thing: Does Sony own, or own ALL the rights to, companies like Namco or Eidos, or BanDai (newly integrated with Namco)!? How about Rockstar Games?? As far as I know, the anwer to that is NO, so how the heck can they presume to tell us what we can do with OUR property, which has been legally bought and PAID FOR, when they don't even have rights to those games in the first place!?!? Money-grubbing piles of ooh:" class="inlineimg" /> !!!!!!!

But the problem here is that Sony, at least in the beginning had very strict controls on what games were released. Even though they were developed by lots of different studios and production companies, in the early days Sony would only allow games to be published if they met a certain standard (which judging by most release titles is fairly low Sony effectively IS the publisher for most titles and therefore can control the market. Very few publishing houses still exist that can actually afford to match that power. EA and Activision are pretty much the only ones who can release product in their own right, because they have the financial muscle to do so. I suspect maybe Infogrammes has that sort of power to but only to a lesser extent and only really in Euroland. Eidos certainly doesn't have the financial clout (haven't they been bought anyway?) Back in the old days you had Ocean, Codemasters, Players etc. All very small companies that would produce their own games and also dupe their own disks/tapes. In todays market it's nearly impossible for a small company to do that.
