The Real Price of PS3

Over here in the UK we are always moaning about how everyone else seems to get things cheaper than us. A few years ago this definitely was true, but these days many of our consumer goods are very competitively priced.

All of our consumer goods include 17.5% VAT (Value Added Tax) which can make things look expensive.

I was just wondering how that works in the USA and Canada...

Do you have to add some sort of Sales Tax onto the published price of the PS3 and do you have to pay tax on it at the end of the financial year ?

Yep, we get a good bit of tax added on. Here in Canada we have a 6% federal Goods & Services tax as well as provincial tax added on. Some provinces use a "harmonized" tax which is a single application of both taxes at once. It's up to each province how they want to do it.

For me it's the 6% GST and then a 10% provincial tax on top of that (tax on tax-sounds like typical government doesn't it?). So that makes for me 640.13 CAD for the 20 GB PS3 and $768.39 for the 60 GB. Considering how our dollar does against the US these days we're being ripped big time!

And I thought we got ripped off, but sounds like you have it bad over there in Canada.
Where abouts in Canada are you from anyway Lyndon? The *normal* Canada, or the French part?
Does the Tax work differently in the French-Canadian states than the English-Canadian?

Expensive do you say? Try with 21% of I.V.A. (your VAT). Here in Portugal the announcied price is 499€ (20Gb) or 599€ (60Gb). The minimal wage is around 400€ (and I´m nice).

I'm in Prince Edward Island along the east coast and very much in the English (what you are calling "normal") part. Each province has its own tax set by the provincial government. Mine happens to be one of the higher rates going.

I think you might need to move then. Or go buy a PS3 somewhere where it's really cheap tax then just take it back to where you live. You'll probably save anywhere up to about $50-$100 that way, lol
