Take this with a few grains of salt- according to a post on GameGossip PlayStation 3's are into production at last. Supposedly a personal contact of the author of that post gave him the word initial production started at factories in Tiawan and China as of August 30.

It remains to be seen just how reliable this is considering Sony doesn't comment on rumors and speculation. Here's hoping they are actually underway making them- time is starting to run short to have the amount they want for launch day.
