There has been some more details arrive regarding the PSP's upcoming global positioning system (GPS) device. As previously reported it is coming in December and expected to cost $52 US (going by current conversion rates from the Yen). We now have more detail regarding specifications and additional uses inluding game support.
Specs first- the GPS device will be using a 20 channel reception system running at a frequency of 1575.42MHz. This should allow it to get your initial position in approx. 40 seconds and will update itself every second after that. Accuracy is very reasonable, within 5 meters (16 feet) of your actual position. The total weight will only be 16 grams (half an ounce for those still not in metric) and measures 45 mm x 41 mm x 17 mm (length x height x deep). As we already knew the device simply plugs directly into the USB port on top.
So now we won't be getting lost quite as easily- what else can we do? Maybe you're into stargazing? If so you can use the "Planetarium Creator Homestar Portable" navigation tool, which has information on over 5 million stars, 300 heavenly objects and has over 15 planetarium- style shows. Not only will you be able to find the stars but get information on them such as name, size and when discovered.
"What about the games" you ask? This one is a bit harder to say with certainty as Sony hasn't exactly been forthcoming with the information either. We do know they have said it will be used in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and the next Everybody's Golf (Hot Shots Golf to those of us in North America). For Hot Shots we will see things like downloadable golf course data and "simulation for shot". As for Metal Gear, your guess is as good as mine. No doubt more light will be shed on this in the next few weeks as the Tokyo Game Show gets closer.
