Default PS3 - Scammers Taking Advantage Of Lik-Sang Situation

A quick word of warning to the readers out there. Looks like there is a rash of e-mail scams on the go from people looking to take advantage of the closure of Lik-Sang. This phishing scheme, as it's called, attempts to get information from the recipient such as credit card info, paypal info, passwords, etc. to steal them and drain whatever cash they can.

In this particular case the e-mail claims that you are owed $9.99 US and they need to confirm their PayPal details though a provided link. I'll say this now- DO NOT CLICK IT! That link leads not to Paypal but to a set up domain called LJK-SANG (note there is a J in place of the I) and any information given there will land in the greedy hands of the scammers.

There's a couple of clues to look at to be sure any supposed e-mails from Paypal are legit:
  • The message will always address you by the name that you entered when you created the account. You will never be referred to as "Dear Valued Customer" or something generic like that
  • Always make sure you are on the real PayPal page by checking the address bar of your browser
  • Always make sure the page you are viewing is secure. This is usually denoted by a "Padlock" symbol at the bottom of your window
  • Just to be sure, never click on the links inside the message. Just open a new window and point your browser to the PayPal site and log in from there. If what is stated in the e-mail is true then the same details should be viewable in your PayPal account. Better safe than sorry.
Here is what the fake e-mail says:

Dear valued customer,

Your Login/Email is:
Your password is:

As of today, Lik-Sang.com will not be in the position to accept any new orders and will cancel and refund all existing orders that have already been placed. Furthermore, Lik-Sang is working closely with banks and PayPal to refund any store credits held by the company, and the customer support department is taking care of any open transactions such as pending RMAs or repairs and shipping related matters. The staff of Lik-Sang will make sure that nobody will get hurt in the crossfire of this ordeal. To read the full article please visit: http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3901

Our records indicates you can retrieve an additional 9,99 USD refund in your PayPal account. In order to successfully retrieve the refund please confirm your existing PayPal account on this page. Please notice that the confirmation of your PayPal account is needed to have this refund send into your PayPal account.

If your PayPal account is no longer active on this [email address removed] address you will have to create a free PayPal account at: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscrcmd=_registration-run to retrieve this refund. Once your account is created and activated please confirm your account information at the above page.

We feel very sorry for any inconvenience and trying to make all refunds to take place as soon as possible.

Team Lik-Sang

Once again, if you have received this e-mail do not click any links provided. Either delete it or foward it to PayPal's antispoofing people at spoof@paypal.com
