Sony says it is still looking to have 1 million PS3 units by the end of 2006. Manufacturing is now running smoothly and shipments are being airlifted on a constant basis.
According to a statement by Sony the first units on the 17th of November were snapped up "within hours" and the 60 GB model sold better than the 20 GB. Along with that, Resistance: Fall Of Man topped the PS3's software sales followed by Madden 07.
The launch had what is called a "halo effect" on the other PlayStation product lines with PS2 sales up by 24% and PSP sales by more than 30%.
"Sony Computer Entertainment America couldn’t be more pleased with the response we have seen from consumers since the launch of PlayStation 3 on Friday," said corporate communications boss David Karraker.
"This truly demonstrates the power of the PlayStation brand and further validates our belief that consumers see real value in an entertainment system that will define the next decade of digital entertainment."
Karraker says they are focused on getting as many PS3s into North America as possible with product being airlifted in weekly. Due to the immediate nature of the shipments, however, they will not be providing any weekly updates on unit numbers.
