Default PS3 - Backward Compatibility Of Euro PS3s "Limited"

It's been learned there was a slight change made to the insides of the Ps3 that will be coming to Europe and the UK on March 23- this change is making some doubt just how well the backward compatibility with PS2 games will be.

"Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3," said David Reeves, president of SCEE.

Sony had said before that 'a new combination of hardware and software emulation will enable the PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation titles, and a limited range of PS2 titles'. It was known that the emulation was eventually going to be in software, similar to what Microsoft does with the XBox 360. Early units of the PS3 in Japan and North America, however, have the PS2's Emotion Engine chipset inside for compatibility.

"The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as in the US and Japanese models," a Sony spokesperson told Reuters. They plan to release a list of currently compatible games when the system launches and this will be updated as they get more PS2 games to work properly under this method.

Well add that to the fact that Europeans are being asked to pay over $800 USD for the Playstation3 and we had to wait an extra 4 months for the console and they want us to pay $96 USD for the games (rrp)... I wonder what will happen next ?

any suggestions ?

FFS! We get no choice of 20 or 60 GB models, asked to pay an inflated price and still get the lowest quality backward compatability...

Sorry Sony but right now I have lots of other things to do with £500 than spend it on a PS3. And this coming from a gamer who bought both the psx and ps2 within 2 months of them going on sale

I live in the U.S., but that doesn't mean I don't feel you guys' pain. I had no idea games were going to run for that much in Euro.

I have tried to come up with reasons for why Sony is doing all of these ridiculous things... Honestly, I am running out of reasons. I guess they just are in it for the money right now, and they will worry about the consumer later.

Rory K, I hope you still decide to buy the system. Despite how much they don't want you to want one, I have found a lot of enjoyment out of the system so far. I can only hope they turn it around after these silly launches are over with. They desperately need to turn things around...

This move to emulation was in the plans from the start- they just didn't do it with the first PS3s in Japan and the US because the emulator they were working on isn't ready. It's a sure bet it will happen over here with later units eventually.

If it wasn't for the region coding grabbing a Japanese or US PS3 would be an option for the backward compatibility problem.

Just thought I'd add that the region coding for games relates to the PS2 and PSONE games as PS3 games ARE, as far as I know, definitely region free. Am I correct?

Oh and MCW, the main price hike over here in good ol' Brighty is due to our Value Added Tax (VAT) set at 17.5%. That's like £17.50 for every £100 (obviously) which is a HUGE amount when you get into multiple hundreds. Don't get me wrong, I'm not make excuses for Sony, I'm as peeved as the next UK gamer, just I'm having to deal with it as I really want one, and am getting one, in exactly er 23 days I think it is now until launch.

p.s. Ay Jim, where's the countdown to the UK launch of PS3 clock on the main site page? Come on, we need one don't we?

That's right, Jason, that was meant to cover PS2 games, PSOne games and movies (both on DVD and Blu-Ray).

Have patience about the countdown clock- Jim's been busy with other aspects of the site (marketing and whatnot).

Thumbs up Re: PS3 - Backward Compatibility Of Euro PS3s "Limited"

About the countdown clock, if Jim needs one, I know of a good free Flash animated/HTML clock you can get.

Go right here: BlingyBlob.com - Custom countdowns and countdown timers for your MySpace, Xanga, Hi5, etc.

The clock is fully customizable, down to the second! I used one on my website, didn't have a problem out of it.

Hopefully you don't have to censor that link... it's just myspace codes, so it should be alright to post here.

It would be an idea except for it having the BlingyBob bit at the bottom. We would prefer to have our own branding on there.

Right. Oh well, I just went looking for countdown clocks on the internet once, and blingyblob was the only one that even worked for me. I am not experienced enough with coding to figure out how to make a neato clock like that, so hopefully someone on Absolute Playstation is.

I've added a page on our thread on our squad page with the code for a perfect countdown clock.
Just take a look at it will you Lyn and see what you think.
The code is javascript but it will work perfectly well, just no fancy images though. Just basically days, hours, minutes and seconds counting down, which is all we need.
It's all in red at the moment but you can change the colour and font to something that matches the site, ok?
Just make sure the everything that is in the HTML tags is left aligned, ok? Else it'll look weird
Jay
