Default PS3 - Sony, Immersion Working Together

Some people thought pigs would be flying before this ever happened but I looked outside and only birds were in the sky.

As many of you know, two years ago Immersion technologies and Sony were in a battle regarding patent infringement on the rumble technology in the PS2 controllers. Sony had lost that suit and this in part prompted the change to the tilt control in the PS3 controllers.

However, that is the past. Sony and Immersion have come into an agreement to "explore the inclusion of Immersion technology in PlayStation format products." Many have criticized the PS3 controller about not having rumble while the competition, Microsoft and Nintendo, continue to use it.

So, does this mean we will see rumble make a return for the PS3? Hard to say- the PS3 was not mentioned specifically. "Our new business agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation gaming community," Immersion CEO Victor Viegas said in a statement. "We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products."

A Sony representative added "We are very pleased to have reached a cooperative agreement with Immersion regarding the use of its advanced vibration technology (haptics technology). We look forward to working closely with them as we explore new and innovative ways to utilize this technology in PlayStation products."

According to a report in the Associated press Sony will pay Immersion USD $22.5 million over three years and Sony will be given a license to use several of Immersion's patents.

This is just weird.

They aren't going to release rumble ps3 controllers any time soon, because who wants to have to buy a new controller after just spending a billion dollars on a new ps3.

So they must be working on something different with sony. I don't have any idea what it could be, so I guess we'll just have to watch as this story progresses.

Here's an idea:
  • PSP2
With somewhere between PS2 and PS3 graphics, and it rumbles!
Now that would be cool. GTA San Andreas Stories with Rumble anyone?

True, you do feel more into the game when playing with rumble, but I have not missed the feature that much. The reason I haven't missed it is because it became standard in every single game that came out. They never tried to be innovative with the rumbling technology, and it showed in every game because the controller simply shook in your hands whenever it felt like it.

Now, picture this with me. Dolby Surround sound makes you feel like you are "IN" a movie, because it surrounds you and directs sounds to the correct locations around your room. Tell me why a controller couldn't do this? I think the entire controller should have "Rumble Surround" and not just where the rumblers are located now (In the handles of the controller). There should be about 5-6 rumblers in different locations on the controller so that you can feel a more accurate depiction of what you are seeing on your TV screen.

There are ways to innovate the rumble that have not been tried, and I've noticed that it has never changed. It started back with the little plug-in rumbler in the n64 controller, and it has not changed since then. Do you get where I am coming from? lol, somebody let me design a controller, I know what I'm doing!

You design a controller? Are you sure you're not the one who first came up with the PS3's "Boomerang" Controller?

Not funny. That's my baby right there ->

You know I'm right about the contoller. They added some cool features to the PS3 controller that the PS2 controller didn't have, but I'm sure some people miss the rumble feature. I just feel like if they ever do bring it back, they should put some more effort into it, rather than making a rumbling piece of plastic that you hold. They could at least make it a context-specific rumbling piece of plastic that you hold.

I won't be surprised to eventually see a SixAxis 2.0 with both rumble and tilt in it along with possibly licensed third- party controllers. We'll have to wait and see what happens- probably won't be anything more o what will come out of this for several months.
