Default PS3 - More Details About The Next Firmware Update

Sony has given some more information regarding what will be included with the next firmware update, scheduled to arrive on March 22, just before the launch of the PS3 in the UK and Europe.

Details have already been said about Folding@Home but there is more than that. One of the major gripes has been the inability to do other things while downloading on the PS3. This will be fixed, allowing gamers to keep at it while grabbing those new purchases/ demos when they come out. The option will also be available to use a full onscreen keyboard, making things easier for those that don't like the cel- phone style in use now.

The web browser also gets an upgrade or two. The browser will now detect the video output settings of the PS3 and set font sizes accordingly to make pages easier to read. Also included will be a "point and zoom" feature, allowing users to zoom in on certain parts of the web page.

The final bit to report on concerns the Remote Play features, which up to now have only been available for users of the 60 GB units as it would only conect over the built- in wifi. With the update owners of the 20 GB system (like myself) will now be able to make use of it as the PSP will be able to connect to the PS3 over an available "hot spot" such as a wireless router or even over the internet.

It's hard to say what time on Thursday this will be available as they haven't had a set time for these things in the past. I'm just hoping the servers can handle the demand this time.

UPDATE- One more item that may be of interest regarding this update. It also includes support for Bluetooth- enabled keyboards and mice.

Thumbs up Re: PS3 - More Details About The Next Firmware Update

Gosh, this is gonna be the best present EVER!!!! Those are all of the things that are wrong with the system right now, so to hear that they are fixing all of them... well it's about time!

Let's see... I'm glad we will now be able to download and play games at the same time, I'm only curious about whether you can play games online and download things at the same time.

The Keyboard update is much needed, I can't see the thing at all. Same thing goes for the webbrowser "Fonts" thing. I haven't been able to read any of the websites online without being a foot from the screen. They are too tiny.

And, glad it's coming out on Thursday, because that gives us time to download it before the U.K. gamers have to when they pick their systems up. I am excited about this firmware update. I hope they continue to improve the service, and not stall out after the U.K. launches are complete.

Actually, the background downloading will be limited to doing other things on the XMB- may not be able to actually game, from some info I have seen.

Also, the UK will be accessing updates on their own servers. I'm still expecting a backlog after past experiences considering the number of units in north America has rose significantly since the last update.

Good news- just found out we will be able to still play games offline while you download stuff in the background. If you happen to go online in a game however, the download will pause.

OK, that's good enough for me. I'm sure that will change in the future, but that's good to hear for now.

One good thing to mention, that this update fixed (I downloaded mine this morn') is that you can now cut off "GAME AUTOSTART". That way, when you cut on your ps3, you don't have to hurry and much the analog stick before the disc in your system starts up.

I'm VERY glad that they fixed that.
