Background:

Joytech Europe was formed in 1997 to swiftly seize the coveted title of the fastest growing console Peripheral Company within the European community. With unprecedented market growth Joytech became the largest supplier of 3rd party console peripherals in the UK. Joytech has successfully provided both quality and cost effectiveness to Playstation, Nintendo and Saturn uses since 1997 and continues to evaluate trends in both consumer and product development environments.

Ergonomics:

image of joytech multi player adapter 2
The Joytech Multi-Player Adapter 2 is compatible with all Playstation 2 games that utilize the multiplayer feature and allows up to five human players to participate in games displaying the Multi Player icon.

The adaptor has the approximate dimensions of 6½ inches (16.5 cm) x 3¼ inches (8.5cm) with a depth of 1½ inches (4 cm). It has four ports; each with a green LED which light up in sequential order when a controller has been correctly inserted. There are also four opening positions that house up to four memory cards. A 6½ inch (17 cm) cable leads to a plug that slot's comfortably into the controller port 1 and memory card 1 terminals of the Playstation 2.

This compact peripheral has obviously been designed to match in with the texture, color and appearance of the Playstation 2 console. It is also surprising light in weight.

Performance:

Setting up the multiplayer adapter is simply a case of removing the control pad and memory card from port 1 of the Playstation 2 and then fitting the single dual purpose plug into the two vacant slots. Up to five joypads and memory cards can now be connected to the adaptor ports marked A, B, C, D and vacant port 2 on the Playstation 2 console. Once the power is switched on the adaptor performs a brief diagnostic test. The four green lights should now light up in sequential order. Once the test is complete the only lights remaining on should be the ones that have a controller correctly connected to that particular port. Now you are ready for a session of multiplayer gaming.

We tested this device on the PS2 games ESPN International Track & Field and FIFA 2001 using a mixture of Sony control pads. For the record we used the PS2 analog controller that comes packaged with the Playstation 2 console, a PS1 old style non-analog pad (no sticks), an original PS1 analog control pad and a new style PS1 analog controller. There were no diverse gaming or handling effects from using any of these official Sony pads, however removal of the PS2 analog controller required slightly more force than removal of the other three pads. This could have been down to lack of use of the newer pad, but we thought was worth mentioning in case this problem persists with further use.
