PSone REVIEW: The year is 2001 and the world is now a very dangerous place. War has broken out all over the globe. On the front line is the counter-terrorism task force... code-named Rainbow. As a secret task force operating on both sides of the Atlantic they are poised to strike anywhere at a minutes notice. But now there is a new type of threat! Someone with hatred in their heart has gained control of the ultimate weapon and is preparing to strike. Once again it\'s up to Rainbow to take him out… before it\'s too late! This is a first person shooter in which a wide range of mission\'s are to be carried out. For those of you who don\'t know - first person means that the main character isn\'t visible and you are literally looking through their eyes. I was amazed how this perspective was relatively easy to adjust to after past mishaps. I recently tried Medal of Honor Underground, but couldn\'t get away with it and that bad experience led me to believe that first person games were not for me... until now! Fully detailed and loaded with weapons it\'s immediately obvious that Rogue Spear has attitude with a capital \'A\'. Movement appeared to be very smooth and after a short period of trial and error I realized that using the sticks was the way to go (the direction buttons seemed just too awkward). I found this in itself to be a refreshing change as many games make the analog control extremely awkward and clumsy. There is an amazing array of options available before play begins ranging from an ample choice of uniform styles… to a wide selection of weapons and gadgets that each team member may carry. Did I mention the teams? Well, the game isn\'t actually played with one character, as there are several members you can choose for each team. So if the character being played with is from the K.I.A. then control is also assumed for one of their remaining team mates, providing they aren\'t already dead. It\'s best to plan a strategy before a mission begins but carrying your plan through successfully is the hard part! Every single decision taken during play affects the overall outcome with the weapon choice particularly important, probably meaning the difference between failure and accomplishment. Rogue Spear looks and sounds as good as it plays. I really loved it when I got up real close to my comrades because they appear just as impressive close up as they do from a distance. When the team member in control \'kicks the bucket\' the view switches to show him/her dying, with blood spurting everywhere (dependant on the blood effects being switched on or off). Right from the start the music kicks in to set the atmosphere for the forthcoming mission. Making your way around the buildings terrorist\'s can be heard screaming obscenities, while team members can be heard communicating keeping you informed about their progress, casualties or kills. The scores given above are our honest opinion and were not influenced in any way by the manufacturer or distributor of the game. SUMMARY OF FINAL RATING (%) 00 - 59 This makes your console seem like an older machine. It utilises little or none of the PSone power. 60 - 69 This game is little more than average and we advise renting or play-testing before considering a purchase. 70 - 79 This is a good solid title that should still appeal to those who like this type of game. 80 - 89 This is a fantastic game that we think you will enjoy playing for quite some time. 90 - 100 This game either pushes the boundaries of it's genre further than ever before on this system, or creates a completely new gaming experience. Either way, it should not be missed and is an essential purchase in our opinion. IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ: It is very important that you are aware that the criteria we use to obtain review scores on the PS2 is very different to that used for games on the original Playstation (PSone). The Processing and Graphical power of the two consoles are vastly different and as our reviews are graded against what we estimate is the achievable potential of each system, it does not mean in any way that a game scoring 80 percent on PS2 is worse than a Playstation (PSone) equivalent which scores 95.
