DEFENDER

"Taking a cue from Activision (who remade the classics, Asteroids and Space Invaders for the PSOne), Midway has grabbed one of their own classic arcade titles from the bygone age and updated it for the next gen consoles. Defender was an awesome arcade game that required skill, good reflexes and memory skills…does the new Defender for the PS2 follow in it’s footsteps, or does it fall flat on it’s proverbial face? "

PS2 Review SUMMARY and SCORE
Danny  "This Is A Good Attempt At A Remake Of An Old Arcade Classic.

Some Of You Older People That Grew Up In The 1980's Will Remember This Old Title (which Can Still Be Found In Some Brittish Arcades, Despite It's Age!). It's The Same Story Really, The Alien Race, Manti, Have Taken Control Over Earth And Mars. You Take Control Of The Rookie Pilot, Kyoto, Who Must Get Back To Earth Before The Manti Make Humans Extinct.

This Game Is Made By Midway (who Earlier Made The Magnificent Spy Hunter), So We Can Be Sure The Graphics Are Very Good. Midway Have Explored The Limits Of The Ps2, And Made Full Use Of Them. The Things That Sand Out Are The Slightly Blurred Graphics Behind Your Craft (giving You The Feeling That You Are Actually Moving The Craft), And The Explosions. The Fmv Sequences Which Appear Throughout Are Next To Flawless, Providing The Comical Edge To The Game.

The Game Sounds Much Like It Looks. Absolutely Excellent. The Dvd Voiceovers Are Prehaps A Small Let Down, But The Rest Of The Typical Sounds You Would Expect From A Space Shoot 'em Up Makes Up For That. The Sound Of Gunfire From Your Turret First Thing In The Morning Is Unbeatable.

And So I Move On To The Game-play/playability. It Is Maybe A Little Tough, Even On The Easiest Of Difficulties. As For The Two Player Co-operative Mode, It Can Be Fun If You Both Enjoy Space Shooters, But Can Be Bland If You Don't. As For Versus Two Player Mode, It's Great If Both Players Are Equally Skilled, But It Can Become, As With All Games With A Versus Option, A Case Of Who Can Dodge The Gunfire Longest?

And Finally, The Lastability. This Game Is One Of The Shining Stars Of My Collection, Which I Know I Will Enjoy Playing Months From Now.

I Strongly Recommend You Buy This Game, If You're A Fan Of Space Shooters, Or If You're Not. I Love It To Bits, And I'm Very Sure You Will Too.
