I Played Mgs1 On The Psx1 But It Was Some Time Ago. I'd Obviously Forgotten About It's Problems, But A Few Minutes With Metal Gear Solid 2 Reminded Me Of All The Annoyances. Not Least Of The Gripes Is That The Game Suffers From Terminal Tomb-raider-cam. You Know The One - Where The Camera Sits Neatly Behind A Box Or Some Scenery So You Can No Longer See Your Character? Yup - It's Still There. Another Huge Annoyance Is That This Game Is A First-person Shooter. Yet In First-person Mode, The Aim / Shoot System Is Dire, And You Can't Move. So To Maneuver For A Shot, You Flick To First-person Mode, Try To Aim, Back To 3rd Person Mode, Move, Back To 1st Person Mode. Holy Snot It's Annoying.
But Potentially The Most Annoying Thing In The Whole Game Are The Cut Scenes And The Damned Communication Device. 99% Of What The Codec Tells You Is Useless Idle Chat Between Characters. And The Cut Scenes Are So Long I Wondered At One Point If I Was Still Playing The Game. In All, I Reckon 70% Of This Game Is Cut Scenes, And The Other 30% Are Where You're In Control. (pestered Of Course By The Ever-present Codec Messages).
I've Since Sold The Game On And Moved Back To Perfect Dark On My N64. Apart From Graphics, Perfect Dark Still Way Outclasses Metal Gear Solid.
If You Liked The First Game, You'll No Doubt Like This One. If You Found It As Annoying As I Did, Then Mgs2 Is Twice As Annoying As The Original. This Is A Classic Example Of A Game Made For The Rental Market." | Graphics 11/20

The Ps2 Is Streets Ahead Of The Ps But Again Only In The First Tanker Bit Is This Power Anywhere Near Utilised.

Solid Snake (you) Start Out On A Tanker In A Mission To Photograph The Newest Metal Gear, "ray". This Mission Is Fun, Hard, Did I Say Fun? Not Only Can You Stuff People In Lockers, You Can Also Hold Them Up For Goodies! But, Soon You Realize That You Are Not Giving The Chance To Fight "ray", At least Not Yet. After The Strangly Short Mission Is Over, You Are No Longer Solid Snake. What? How Could This Be? Snake Is The Reason Most If Not All Of Us Bought This Game! Instead You Have To Play As This New Guy Named "raiden". What A Loser! Trust Me, It Gets Worse. His Girlfriend "rose" Is The Data Analyst, Save Person, In The 2nd Mission. Not Only Does All This Suck, But The Fact That The Story Totaly Changes Sucks Also. You Dont Get To Fight Half Of The Bad Guys Shown To You, And "ray" Even Though You Have To Fight Like 6 Of Them At The Same Time In A Little Room, Is A Push Over. However, The Plot Past The Tanker Section Is Lousy. The Story Is Awkward And Tends To Run Into Tangents That Borderline On Pretentious Philosophical Bs (i Felt At Times Like I Was Being Preached To). Fortunately The Dialogue Is Well Voiced, Unfortunately It Drones On For What Seems Like Forever (i Thought Soul Reaver 2 Was Chatty), And Eventually Caused Me To Dread The Cutscenes And Character Interaction. There Were Point Were I Jokingly Thought To Myself "wouldn't It Be Funny If Raiden Got Shot In The Head While Yapping Endlessly On His Codec" The Characters Are Interesting Enough, But Their Actions And Motivations Seem Contrived And Somewhat Confused At Times. By The End Of The Game, All The Double Crossing And Triple Crossing Just Made Me Feel Like I'd Been Watching A Bad Dolph Lundgren Movie. All This On Top Of The Fact That Snake Isn't Even Playable Through The Latter 2/5ths Of The Game Left A Bad Taste In My Mouth. I Know I'm Treading On Sacred Land Here, And That Many Gamers Consider Hideo Kojima A Genius (which He Is In A Game Play Sense) But This Title's Dramatic Structure Is Rubbish. I Wonder, Is It Something Lost In The Original Translation From Japanese To English, Or Is Its Just Hideo's Failed Attempt To Put Eastern Philosophy And Ideals Into Western Inspired Characters In A Quasi-american Cinema Format. At Any Rate If This Is The State Of The Art In The "interactive Movie" We Should Expect More From the "interactive Screenwriter". Don’t Get Me Wrong, I Love The Metal Gear Series But I Think That It’s Gotten Too Heady On Its Own Success. Somehow Its Gone From Being A Action Packed Video Game With A Dramatic Arc To Being Para-military Soap Opera With A Little Action On The Side.
The Last Game Was So Much More Succinct And To The Point. The Story Moved The Action The Action Moved The Plot, It All Worked Together. Sure It Hat A Love Interest And Some Sibling Rivalry, And Of Course A Moral. But It Was Nowhere Near The Mellow Dramatic Ranting That This Game Is.
Contrary To What You Might Think I Feel That Overall This Title Is A Must Have, Its A Milestone In Terms Of Technology. Graphically It’s Wonderful At Points. Gameplay Is Flawless Once You Get The Controls Down. The New Characters Are Great, (raiden Is A Nice Touch, Just Wish I Could Have Played Snake More (pretty Funny That Snake Last Name In The Latter Part Of The Game Is Pliskin Of Snake Pliskin From Escape For Ny & La).) Thats Wear The Good Stuff Ends. I'm Sure Players Will Sing Praises To It Story And The Realism, But Come On, Would You Really Pay To See This Movie On Screen. I For One Would Not. Its A Shame Really, This Game Could Have Been A Real Leap In Terms Of The Interactive Storytelling, But It Just Seams To Get Muddled Down In A Poorly Structured Plot And Emotionally Contrived Character Interaction." | Graphics 15/20
