Guide to Spiderman 3 on the PlayStation 2
Spiderman 3 PS2 is, obviously as the title suggests, the Playstation 2 tie in to the original movie. It is a third person perspective action game (much in the vein of Grand Theft Auto) where you can play the game's story missions, or vere off and tackle some random crimes and alternative missions. The action is very fast paced, and like the previous games you play Spiderman himself, as you swing between buildings and save the city from the latest crime wave.
Sporting a great cast (most from the movie, with the exception of Kirsten Dunst) has still not made for a flawless game. The cast do deliver a passionate performance, regardless. But despite the big budget of the movie, it appears the development studios were less interested in making a good game for the older consoles as they were for the new. The port into PS2 is not good at all when it comes to the graphics, and the game itself could have been much better. Many times the game versions of movies fall short, and in the case of Spiderman 3, it looks like it could be another one of those.
Peter Parker, aka Spidey, is just getting used to his dual life and enjoying his relationship with Mary Jane when things go horribly awry. Some pretty bad villains have suddenly decided to cause some chaos, and the game includes extra villains that weren't in the movie (Morbius and Lizard make their way into the game.) Sandman and Venom also make their appearance, as well as some random NYC gangs. Controlling Spidey is fairly easy in the Playstation two version (the Wii version came under much criticism) and there is a lot of content in the game. However, the missions become pretty stock-standard after a while, and this can add some boredom value. A neat addition is Spidey's black suit (the cool one we see in the movie) which you can 'put on,' allowing you to add more damage to your opponents. The only problem with Spidey's black suit is that it begins to feed off of you, and you have to take it off in time before it kills you. Taking it off can be difficult, too, and gets more difficult the more you use the suit (you have to push a combination of buttons that gets longer every time.) This is obviously to tie in with the story line of the suit in the movie. Even though the enemies are kind enough to wait for you to remove your suit, it can still be a little irritating every time. The camera in the game can be pretty challenging too – sometimes cutting off your vision or making it difficult to see what you're doing (or who you're fighting.) The fighting moves are cool, in a Spidey sort of way, and you receive hero upgrades and gain more experience throughout the game.
As mentioned earlier, the visuals are actually very disappointing. The buildings have little to no texture and the characters are rather expressionless. Some characters are actually repeated throughout the game, as well, in terms of guys you should rescue or the help you with clues. Their accents can change, but often the character itself doesn't. This doesn't help to make the game very believable. The music score is pretty average, and the voice acting is good (mostly due to the cast) but sometimes placed in awkward spots.
All in all, Spiderman 3 for PS2 can be a good romp swinging through NYC and beating up some bad guys, but leaves a lot to be desired.
