Guide to State of Emergency on the PlayStation 2
Sure, Grand Theft Auto got up a few peoples noses with its car-jacking and cop-killing a few years ago, but lets face it, the graphics were so poor that only someone who was one sandwich short of a picnic would ever think of it as real life.
The PS2 brings with it graphics that can blur this reality/fantasy line a little more and so when a game based on taking part in a huge city riot was announced by the same company... everyone sat up and took notice.
STATE of EMERGENCY allows you to take part in a huge 100+ person violent riot in various locations, with the aim of the game being to keep it going as long as possible and overrun the cops.
Smash store windows, burn cars and kill the police using various weapons ranging from bricks to rocket launchers. Make sure you dont get cornered by the authorities though, cos they will kick you inside-out if they catch you !
Possibly the most disturbing aspect is the ability to set your enemy on fire, which in a fantasy environment is fine, however, in its current setting - when its cops that are being char-grilled - and the memory of the LA riots still fervent in the minds of many, its possible that this title may never see the light of day unless some radical changes are made.
To try to get past the censors, the developers have concocted a storyline around the fact that you are trying to overcome an evil regime that has divided your city and restricted the free movement of everyone to specific areas.
What will ultimately make or break this title is how the mainstream media react to it… if they play it cool then the mere fact that the gameplay itself (which uses the notoriously weak Final Fight, Double Dragon genre that constantly comes up short) may just ensure poor enough reviews in the specialist press that gamers decide to give it a miss.
Unfortunately the chances of this happening are pretty remote… so get ready for a frenzy of free publicity for this game, which will no doubt ensure that it sells by the million !
We will remain impartial on this one (resisting the temptation to accuse the developers of blatant opportunism) until we have actually played the game; so expect more news after playtesting.
