Guide to Tiger Woods 09 on the PlayStation 2
Electronic Arts has been known for creating successful sports simulation franchises. This year, EA is bringing back the latest edition of one of its top franchises, the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series. In terms of virtual golf gaming, this title has set the trend for golf gaming standards and with a new installment on the way, it promises to provide something fresh and more advanced as compared to previous games.
The game itself already has a number of the right components to make an exciting play. However, playing actual game and virtual golf is different altogether. The developers have looked into certain aspects of the game where improvements could be made. What Tiger 09 offers fans is a balance: it now proves to be as challenging as the real thing with its new attributes and courses, but it allows not-so-skilled players to enjoy the game itself.
Let's look into the changes and improvements incorporated in this new version that sets it apart from previous games.
New Coach Feature
Coaches play a crucial role in any sport, including golf. Here's your chance to improve on your game by taking advice from Tiger Woods' actual coach himself, Hank Haney. If it did wonders for Tiger Woods' game, then you might want to take advantage of Haney's knowledge of the game to boost your skills on the stick.
At the start of the game, he will give you a few tips on how to approach the game and what techniques you can employ. Before you start off, he will give you a few basic challenges to properly assess your skills in terms of different aspects involved: power, putting, accuracy, and short game. Depending on your performance on each of these challenges, then Haney will be able to gauge your golfing skills and assist you on problem areas.
This feedback system is evident all throughout the game. He will also be giving you pointers while the game is ongoing, especially if you are missing a few holes along the way.
Dynamic Attribute System
This new feature has become more realistic as it now impacts your overall performance in the game. Basically, you earn attribute points whenever you are successful in the field. The attribute points are also a concrete reflection of your game's improvement. The developers decided to incorporate this concept into the game and adjusted the players' skills based on the points earned. The game is moving on to a more dynamic system of acquiring points and making improvements. The more (or less) points you earn, will influence whether your skills in terms of power, accuracy, putting, and short game will increase or decrease accordingly.
Aside from being more dynamic and realistic in using this feature to approach the game, it also discourages cheating into the course. If you manage to sweep off a round with ease, then your short-game and power attributes will improve. If you are carelessly hacking the balls away into the bush, then expect them to dip as well.
Rewind Feature
This is merely a tiny tweak that enables you to sharpen up your golfing skills. With the rewind feature, you are given the opportunity to re-create a bad shot and, hopefully, make the proper adjustments. As the name implies, you can try the same shot for the second time. And the great thing about the rewind feature is that your bad shot is not recorded into the attributes and you have the opportunity to gain a better score if you manage to improve on your shot for the second try.
Club Tuning Feature
A number of actual tour players have their clubs customized. Now, you can adjust your club for better performance on the field. You can set the power and accuracy of your club by using this new feature.
However, this opportunity comes with a trade-off. If you did adjust your club's attributes then you will also consequently reduce your sweet spot. This is where the game gets tricky – as your sweet spot has decreased, you will also need more accuracy if you want your shots to hit their mark. This is a great way to spice up the game, especially for those who have been consistently playing this franchise. Just another way to infuse more challenge into the gameplay aspect.
Improved Online Play
The Gamernet feature was first introduced in last year's edition of Tiger Woods PGA Tour. Previously, this online feature enabled players to upload their own completed challenges and trick shots into the server for other gamers to download.
This time, developers have integrated a new feature with Tiger 09. In the middle of your game, there might pop up a random challenge, which you can opt to beat. If you complete the challenge, you have the opportunity to upload new challenges into the Gamernet server so you can earn points.
The Online play also now sports the simultaneous feature, which allows up to 4 players at once. This type of simultaneous play does not require you to wait in-between shots by your fellow gamers; instead, each gamers can finish the course in their own pace and time. If you do complete your course before the others, you can update your scoreboard or join the crowd and taunt them, which can be really fun for the game.
5 New Courses
In efforts to keep things fresh, here are 5 new courses to play on and expand your golfing experience:
*Bay Hill
*Gary Player Country Club
*Sheshan
*Wentworth
*Wolf Creek
Despite the additional courses though, you can only play as much as 16 sets for the entire game. A few standard courses still remain such as Pebble Beach and Sawgrass. However, expect some major graphic improvements on this one especially in terms of lighting and layouts for the holes. Plus, the color palette is much more realistic this time.
These new features will appeal to series veterans who are skilled enough and want to infuse more challenge to make the game more exciting. For newbies though, this will pose enough challenge but still be accessible to those still on the stage of developing their golfing skills.
