Something interesting I found in the paper yesterday, thought some of you might enjoy it. Yes, women really are born worriers Something men have always suspected has been confirmed by scientists-women are born worriers. Research shows they have lower levels of a chemical in the brain which regulates anxiety. Having less of the chemical-known as COMT-appears to make a person more highly strung. The DNA of more than 400 men and women in the US was set against brain activity readings and the results of psychological tests. The highest anxiety levels were found among women with a certain version of the gene which makes COMT. The biggest worriers were those with two copies of this version, one from each parent. 'This was associated with a threefold to fourfold decrease in COMT levels,' said Dr Mary-Anne Enoch of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. 'Our study suggests women with this genotype may be more vulnerable to anxiety because their COMT levels fall below a minimum threshold.' Men with the gene varient showed no similar rise in stress, according to the study, published in Psychiatric Genetics Journal. 'Men naturally tend to have lower anxiety scores,' said Dr Enoch. The link between COMT and anxiety was discovered while investigating alcoholism. Previous studies indicated the chemical could be linked to psychiatric diseases such as alcoholism and schizophrenia.' Article published in The Metro on 03/03/03 Loved this one, doesn't seem to be very well carried out research to me as having produced their findings they then rubbish them slightly by saying that men don't suffer from stress even if they have the ultra stress varient of the gene. ie women are stressed anyway varient gene or not Could be useful to all those blokes out there who've thought their bird was a mentler or a bunny boiler. Now you can write it off as a medical condition caused by the low COMT varient gene. After all it has been linked with psychiatric diseases. :D
