Guide to Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance on the PlayStation 2
The Mortal Kombat series is a much loved franchise, and it continues to deliver excellent games within the fighting game genre. Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance is the latest installment, bringing in all the things that made the original so fantastic as well as some added slickness and graphics.
Mortal Kombat has always been known to be a bit of a gorefest, and Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance continues in that vein, with its over-the top ludicrous comical violence, and fast paced action. Deadly Alliance refers to a deadly pact between two of the most evil characters in the series – Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. As always, they want to take over the earth realm, and the Mortal Kombat Tournament dual to the death is where things are decided.
There really isn't much of a story other than that, but fighting games are not there for the story – they're there for us to beat our friends up. Mortal Kombat, however, has always had a great backstory and the 10 minute cutscene in the beginning of Deadly Alliance is quite impressive.
There are three modes of play offered : standard (single player) mode where you battle through a ladder of deadly opponents. Versus mode, where you play multiplayer and beat up your best friend. Or Konquest mode, which functions as a tutorial (showing you the cool combos and moves you can do with each character) while providing you some of the back story.
In all of these modes you can earn Koins, which allow you to unlock characters and various goodies in the Krypt mode. These goodies are also often development stuff – such as concept art, shots from comic books, images and lots of stuff to make fans happy.
However, the game play itself is quite a lot of fun and – while playing on the strengths of Mortal Kombat classics (ie, the infamous 'fatality' moves are back, offering hilariously gruesome ways of finishing off your opponent) - there are some significant additions. There is a great mix of old and new characters in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance for the PS2, and each character has two unarmed stances and one weapon stance.
There are some great styles included in the game, and most of them are actually modeled from traditional martial arts – including some strange and obscure ones. The number of styles is impressive, and the addition of weapons in the game makes for more fun as well. Players can also switch styles in mid fight or mid-combo, and as you progress through the game you start finding your own style of fighting.
There are some interesting combo moves, and the use of the Playstation 2 controls in the game is pretty intuitive and fully customizable. Admittedly, you need to be REALLY fast for some of the moves so if you can get yourself an arcade set up it would greatly increase your enjoyment of the game.
The arenas in which you fight in are rather large, and interactive (such as a level where statues can spew acid onto the fighters.) Even though the arenas are large, they do have 'invisible walls' which means there is a point in which you cannot go any further. However, this doesn't really take away from the enjoyment of the game. The textures and backgrounds are done very well, and the animations smooth and consistent. The music of the game fits perfectly with the series (and will remind you of the earlier Mortal Kombat games) and the sound effects are great, as well (incorporating the classic voice-overs and slapping noises of Mortal Kombat.)
Altogether, Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance offers a great, unusual and incredibly fun fighting game for the PS2, and ensures this series keeps strong and dies hard.
