Guide to Destroy All Humans 2 on the PlayStation 2
It’s safe to say that THQ and Pandemic were surprised at how well the original Destroy All Humans! did, having achieved Greatest Hits/ Platinum Hits status less than a year after release. With its mix of open-ended gameplay and a script taking potshots at 50s sci fi B-movies it was one of the better action games out at the time. Now, they’re at it again with the sequel, Destroy All Humans! 2.
DAH!2 is an action/adventure game with a similar style to the Grand Theft Auto series. While you do have particular missions you must accomplish to continue the story there is no particular rush to do them. If you like one can run around causing havoc doing things like blasting army vehicles with your saucer's death ray, take over human bodies or just run around blasting everyone.
Set 10 years after the original we are now in the 60’s where free love is in full bloom. We find Crypto has set himself up as President of the US and spends his time partying with the ladies now that the actions taken by his predecessor have let his race solve their reproduction problem. The Russians have discovered what has happened, however, and have plans of their own. With his mothership destroyed by a nuclear missile and his commander, Pox, reduced to a holographic shell of his former self players, as Crypto, must find out just what the Russians are up to and stop them. You don’t necessarily have to do it alone, however- a new component of the game is 2 player co-op play. Now two players can work together to get through the levels and foil the KGB plot.
Destroy all Humans 2 puts players in the spaceboots of CryptoSporidium-138, a member of the Furon race and clone of Cypto-137, the original game’s character. In other words... you play this game as an alien! The story is once again filled with humor as it takes shots at 60s icons such as secret agents, hippies, Japanese monster movies and the Cold War.
Players have access to a variety of weapons including some new ones such as the Anal Probe (he’s an alien, that’s what they do) and enhanced mental abilities to battle the likes of KGB agents, ninjas and giant creatures. One other new ability is the “body snatch”, where you take over a person’s body. This is crucial to finding out information from other humans by talking to key people. This is where one improvement has been made as you now have multiple choices when conversing with humans and Pox. You usually have to choose all options when talking to Pox to get new missions but this makes for extra opportunities to go for the humor.
Controls are pretty much identical to the original game, which is a good thing. There are some tweaks, however, such as in how landing zones for your saucer is handled. Instead of your saucer being parked in the one place through the entire level you can set up additional landing areas through finding statues of Arkvoodle, an ancient Furon god. By appeasing his demands you are rewarded with a new landing zone to make getting to areas quicker. The saucer has some new abilities as well- you can now abduct humans for use in the Gene Splicer (for enhancing your abilities), pick up and drop vehicles as well as drain them of energy to keep your cloaking field energized. New weaponry can be had as well such as the Sonic Boom, Anti Gravity Field and the Quantum Deconstructor. All weaponry, both on foot and the saucer, can be upgraded for a price. You will have to look through the entire level finding Datacores, Furotech Cells and alien artifacts to unlock everything.
In what time I’ve had with the game so far I’ve found just about everything has been an improvement on the original. I’ll reserve final judgement, however, for the full review.
