Guide to FIFA 2008 on the PlayStation 2
This is the last version of FIFA to appear on the Playstation2 and the developers have promised that it will be the best one ever made.
If you are a footie fan, then you MUST have played one the previous FIFA games, they have been around forever and are easily the best selling (world) football franchise.
FIFA Soccer 2008 is one of those games that is easy to pick up, yet hard to master. As ever the easy mode is way too easy, while the most difficult is almost impossible unless you are some form of android.
If you are one of the few who has not already played FIFA on PS2, then this is a football (or Soccer if you are from the USA) simulation that allows you to jump into the shoes of some of the best players the world has ever seen, carrying out their signature moves and taking your team all the way to the top of the league.
The computer controls all of the other players on your team, and those of your opponent. Switching between players in FIFA 08 is now done by pointing the right analogue joypad stick in the direction of the player you want to become. Within minutes you will wonder how you managed without this feature, as it makes FIFA so much more intuitive than the previous versions on the PS2.
Sure, FIFA 2008 PS2 can be played on one of those days when you’re bored all alone at home, but it really comes to life in multi-player mode...
This year sees a new level of realism in FIFA with the addition of the co-op mode. It gives two people a chance to choose a player and then stick with them for the entire game. It’s a weird experience when you don’t have the ability to quickly change to another player on the field and aims to help the players to learn the game and how it is really played; you don’t defend your goals and tackle your opponents, you loose. To keep you involved, there are only five players on a team which also makes the game more realistic. FIFA has traditionally been played by younger, or less technical players, so trying to convince your friend to play this properly and not just charge in and take on everyone will be as much of a challenge as the actual game mode its-self.
All of the previous multi-player modes are still available in FIFA 2008 on PS2, allowing you to invite up to 3 mates to play with you on your system.
There are some very subtle changes in FIFA 2008 on the PS2. Many of them have come directly from true fans of the game, and you can tell. A great example of this is that when you have a free kick or a throw-in you can hide the icons that would show your opponent where you are planning the ball to be kicked or thrown… a tiny but vital change that will definitely improve multi-player games.
There are lots more surprises scattered throughout the gameplay and we don’t want to spoil them all for you, so lets end by saying that the final version of FIFA on the original Sony PlayStation was brilliant, and the same is true for this very last FIFA on the PS2.
