Guide to Okami on the PlayStation 2
Much time has passed since the Sun God Amaterasu last walked the earth. In an epic battle of good versus evil, Amaterasu defeated the nefarious eight headed serpent Orochi. Peace and harmony reigned throughout the land for one hundred years. But now an evil has awoken, the likes of which have not been seen in a century. A lone white wolf rises to the challenge and departs on an adventure to thwart this evil. That wolf is Amaterasu, the Sun God reborn. Okami is the story.
Okami is a unique adventure game from Capcom. Blending traditional Japanese folklore and beautiful watercolor artwork, the game plays like a living piece of art. The world has become engrossed by a dark evil while the beauty and color of nature has been crushed. As Amaterasu, a god reborn in wolf form, you must set the world right by restoring beauty and life to the land. To do this, you must regain your powers that have been scattered amongst the stars. Along your journey you will help the people of Nippon as you confront dark forces that are gripping the land. Eventually you will become powerful enough to destroy all evil and return the beauty of nature to the world.
Gameplay centers around Amaterasu the wolf exploring the land of Nippon. Saddled with a sprite-like sidekick Issun as a guide, you'll encounter people and help them complete tasks. You'll have various duties at any given time but can also roam freely and explore the land. There are random encounters with evil forces that can be met head on or tactfully avoided. With treasures to find and shops to do trade in, there are plenty of items to help in your quest. A log book journal directs your journey and there are many other guides that provide helpful tips. Earning praise through your actions of kindness and bravery will help increase your abilities. The further you venture, the harder your tasks become and in turn, the greater the rewards.
What makes Okami so special are the celestial brush techniques. Armed with a calligraphy styled ink brush, you'll use these techniques throughout the game. You learn them by restoring constellations in the night sky. Each constellation represents a power stroke. These power strokes come into play in virtually every aspect of the game. Some brush strokes are used to create beauty and to manipulate your environment. Make flowers grow, cause trees to bloom, create wind, even change the sky from night to day. Other techniques are offensive like slashing attacks, manipulating fire or creating cherry bombs. Almost everything in the game can be affected in one way or another by these techniques. Finding out which ones to use and when to use them is the driving force in this game.
The characters in the game are interesting and memorable. Even though Amaterasu never speaks, he exudes an air of honor and strength. Issun, the wandering artist sidekick, provides most commentary and much of the comic relief. Susano the drunken, reluctant hero who must prove his worth is unforgettable. The enigmatic French accented Waka is a constant source of drama. Even Sakuya, the spirit of the tree Konohana, plays an intricate part in the balance of nature. These are but a few examples of characters you'll meet along the way. Although there is no actual voice acting during dialogue, character speech is represented by an electronic chatter that adds depth to otherwise bland text.
The graphics, while somewhat cartoonish in nature, are actually rather impressive. A nice mix of cell shading and classic Japanese watercolor art make this a visually unique experience. Some cut scenes are like watching a tidal wave of color as new life washes across a once desolate land. The smoothness of animation that springs forth from your brush makes switching between brush mode practically flawless. The 3-D environments are nicely rendered and wonderfully diverse. With an underlying motif of color and nature, the animations bring this game to life.
The attack system is very basic with only a few moves to master. Most battles involve a combination of fighting using special weapons in concert with brush strokes. The special weapons are found during the game, although you will start out with one. These weapons can be mastered through training and can be upgraded using items found in the game. The enemies get harder to defeat as you go, so you'll need to advance your fighting techniques. There are several boss fights that present quite a challenge if you have not properly prepared.
Controller use during gameplay is very elegant, especially when using brush techniques. Press a button to enter brush mode and then guide your brush with an analog stick to create an ink stroke that instantly translates into the scene. This feature is especially useful in battle as it instantly freezes all action as you paint. Menus are easily navigated when accessed and clear in their purpose. Camera angles can be changed slightly pressing a button but can be troublesome in some smaller conflicts.
