Guide to X-Men The Official Game on the PlayStation 2

The ghosts of Alkali Lake haunt the X-Men and the price surrendered there was high. A colleague, a teacher, a friend and loved one, Jean Grey sacrificed her life there saving the students of Professor Xavier's academy. Colonel William Stryker had stolen parts of Cerebro, the machine Professor X used to track down mutants. Intent on destroying all the world's mutants, Stryker created a dark version of Cerebro. Employing the mutant powers of his own son, he kidnapped young mutants to test the device. With the help of Magneto's Brotherhood of mutants, the X-Men thwarted Stryker's evil plans. But the stolen components were left behind and now the X-Men must return to Alkali Lake. What awaits them there is an unknown evil that will threaten the very existence of mutantkind.

X-Men: The Official Game by Activision is a third person action adventure where you battle through different levels as X-Men. Combining elements of fighting, stealth, some shooting and a kind of skate racing, you'll use your mutant powers to defeat the enemy. The original story by Chris Clairmont of Marvel Comics and screenplay by director Zak Penn bridges the events between the movies X-Men 2: United and X-Men 3: The Last Stand. Playable characters are Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Iceman with several missions including AI controlled Storm and Colossus.

Gameplay revolves around story based missions that has the X-Men searching for the stolen Cerebro technology. Although the storyline is linear, the characters branch off in different directions. Once you complete a few basic missions, the option of how you proceed is yours. All missions require completion eventually to unlock future chapters and move forward in the game. As you proceed you can upgrade and evolve your powers by mutating genes in your DNA. Genes are acquired by completing mission, the number will vary depending on the difficulty level you play. Bonus features include costumes and danger room missions unlocked by collecting Weapon X and Sentinel Tech pieces throughout the game.

Each X-Man has unique powers they use to defeat enemies and complete their missions. A good portion of levels involve Wolverine, one of the most popular X-Men, as some clues to his secret past are explored. Wolverine has unbreakable adamantium claws and accelerated healing which make him virtually impossible to kill. Brutal hand to hand combat is Wolverine's tactics with various combos at his disposal. As he slashes his way through enemy hordes, he builds up a fury that can be unleashed in a berserker rage. Capable of a lunge leap clear across the room or killing with one stroke, he is most dangerous in fury mode.

Nightcrawler, the pious, blue skinned devilish creature is one of the brighter points of gameplay. Though not quite as powerful as Wolverine, his teleportation powers are a sheer delight. Nightcrawler uses his acrobatic skills and teleportation in combat against his foes. Able to teleport behind unsuspecting enemies, stealth from the shadows is his calling card. The uncanny ability to avoid attack makes him very elusive and an effective assassin. Secrets revealed at the end of the story explain why Nightcrawler is absent from the latest film.

Completing the trio of playable characters is Iceman, the youngest X-Man. Still unsure of his role as an X-Man, he is trying to prove he can pull his own weight. Iceman employs the power of cold with a freezing beam and powerful hailstorms. All the while he surfs through air as he speed skates on his ice slide. Maneuvering at high speeds and attacks from long distance make Iceman a formidable target. His missions often involve timed trials where he must use his ice slide powers to race through the danger.

The villians in the game are some of Marvel's classics that fans of the X-Men will recognize. Wolverine faces off against Sabertooth, Lady Deathstrike and the Silver Samurai. Nightcrawler takes on Multiple Man and is constantly haunted by the ghostly apparition of Jason 143. Iceman squares off against former friend Pyro who has become disillusioned with humankind and has joined with Magneto. There are plenty of soldiers from the criminal organization Hydra with various weapons and different skills. But the deadliest foes are the mutant hunting Sentinels, produced and controlled by the ultimate threat, the super villainous robot Master Mold.

While the graphics are not extravagant, the game offers a pleasant visual experience. The character models are fairly detailed and the environments are decently done. The cutscenes are rendered almost comic book style, as a mixture of still animation and action movement. Voice acting of the primary characters is done by the original actors from the X-Men movies. Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Alan Cumming and Shawn Ashmore all reprise their roles from the films.

If you are a fan of the X-Men comics and movies, then X-Men: The Official Game is a satisfying experience. The Marvel Universe is represented through heroes and villains in this movie based game that spans between the two films. The missions are varied, the gameplay is fun and some storyline secrets are brought to the light. The brutal fury of Wolverine, the acrobatic stealth of Nightcrawler and the slick speed of Iceman make playing as X-Men a mutant dream.
