Guide to World Series Of Poker Tournament Of Champions on the PlayStation 2
Over the last few years professional poker playing has come into the spotlight, moving from the small back rooms of casinos to mainstream television coverage. One of the oldest and biggest is the World Series Of Poker. Anyone winning this tournament, which can draw thousands of players, can rightfully be considered one of the elite in poker.
Last year Activision released the first World Series Of Poker for the PlayStation 2, PSP and other systems. With its easy controls and competent AI along with the ability to play online against other would-be sharks it was one of the better options out there. We now have a followup to that game entitled World Series Of Poker: Tournament Of Champions and there's been a few improvements.
Before starting out one may want to customize how their on-screen character looks. There are a variety of options from head to toe to make your character unique.
A slight change has been made to Career Mode, which sees the player try to collect enough points from circuit tournaments to earn an invitation to the WSOP itself. Instead of being flung head-on into tournaments we start at the regular Friday night game among friends. For some reason this game is being dealt to by Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, one of the top players today (Chris' explanation involves 63 hours of poker, a bad bet and a bean burrito). Because of losing this bet he now has to take of you as a protegé and will decide who to take based on how the game gets played. Eventually you do get chosen and your path to a pro poker career begins! As you play through the various tournaments you will find yourself across the table from some other notable pros such as Men "The Master" Nguyen, Phil "Unabomber" Laek and 2005 WSOP winner Joe Hachem, a total of 25 pros in all.
If you feel you aren't quite ready for the full fledged career one can also play a game in Quickplay or take it online in Multiplayer (if one has broadband access- sorry dial-up users). EyeToy support is included for those that like to see who they are playing. You can also play against people who are playing the PSP version online. You can even take your career on the road if you have both the PS2 and PSP versions by transferring the game save via the PSP USB cable.
Several poker game variants are available- the ever popular Texas Hold 'Em, High-Low and Omaha, each with several variations on betting limits. There are a number of video tutorials included to help the beginner accessible from the main menu.
The controls of this game are easy to grasp with a simple push on the D-pad or left stick to choose what you want to do (call, raise, fold, go all in) and hit the X button. The clean graphics make it easy to see all that is happening at the table. The players on the table are somewhat well-animated but have a limited set of movement. Voices are synched up well but again, the number of phrases is limited so you won't be long before hearing the same thing again.
The computer AI is decent and will provide a bit of a challenge after a bit. One extra in this game to keep players coming back are Collector Chips, which you earn for various things like making a specific hand, knocking a specific amount of players out of a tournament and defeating pros. One can view all of their awards in the career menu.
This game is turning out to be one of the better choices for poker play on the PS2. Let's shuffle up and deal! Check out the review to see if its the best new poker playstation 2 game.
